medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. March) is the feast day of:
Castulus of Rome (d. c. 286-288) Castulus was an official of the imperial
palace in Rome. He housed some fellow Christians, and was denounced.
After questioning and torture, he was thrown into a pit, which was then
filled with sand, burying him alive. (yuck!)
Eutychius of Alexandria (d. 356) Eutychius was a subdeacon of the church
of Alexandria. He took a stand against Arianism, for which he was
sentenced to labor in the mines, but he died of exhaustion on the road
there.
Braulio (d. 650) Braulio is an important early saint of Spain. He was of
noble birth (his father was bishop of Osma), became a monk, then joined
Isidore's school at Seville. In 631 B. succeeded his brother as bishop of
Saragossa. He was an important writer and preacher, and played a role in
converting the Visigoths to catholic Christianity.
Liudger (d. 809) Liudger was a Frisian, educated by Gregory of Utrecht and
Alcuin of York. He then became an active missionary in Frisia. L. spent
time at Rome and Monte Cassino after being driven out by Widukind's
rebellion; on his return north he founded a monastery at Werden and in time
became bishop of Munster
Bertillo of Dijon (d. c. 878/888) Bertillo was abbot of St. Benigne,
Dijon. Vikings attacked and sacked the monastery, slaughtering B. and
other monks of the community before the altar.
