Dear all,

Funded project, based in the Geography Department at Exeter
University. ONE YEAR, from September 2003.

The School of Geography and Archaeology at the University
of Exeter require:
Post-Doctoral Research Assistant
We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow for one year
(from September 2003) on an AHRB-funded project entitled
Landscape archaeology and community in Devon: an oral
history approach. This unusual project integrates
techniques of oral history and cultural studies with more
traditional methodologies associated with landscape
archaeology and historical geography. Focussing on the WWII
plough-up campaign in four areas of Devon, that are already
the subject of scientific, environmental and archival
research, this project will add an oral history 'layer' to
a database of recent landscape change. At the heart of the
project however, is the additional aim of providing a more
meaningful, democratic and community-led account of the
landscape, thereby augmenting, challenging and animating
the more traditional scientific information.
The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent in
geography, oral history or a relevant subject. Previous
experience of oral history work is essential. Familiarity
with historical/cultural geographies of rurality and
landscape would be an advantage.
Initial salary will be up to £21,125 p.a. depending on
experience and qualifications. The post will be for a fixed
term of one year.
Further information is available from Dr David Harvey,

and names and addresses of the three referees) should be
