this phenomenon is discussed in an interesting book with a somewhat
unfortunate title :
Ralph Merrifield, _The archaeology of ritual and magic_, London : B.T.
Batsford, 1987. xiv, 224 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.
The author was/is connected with the Museum of London and this book brings
together a discussion of a great many very, very curious popular beliefs and
practices --from pre-roman times to the present-- which are ordinarily on the
margins of "academic" scholarship, everything from bent pilgrims' badges being
found in rivers to old shoes walled up in house chimneys and goats' heads
burried under thresholds.
and, pots imbedded in church walls, the discussion of which i've forgotten.
interesting book, though.
your Cistercian book probably isn't Terryl Kinder's quite wonderful
_Cistercian Europe: Architecture of Contemplation_,
