Reading by Gudrun Pausewang
Thursday, 3 April 2003, 7.00pm
Gudrun Pausewang is a highly regarded writer of literature for
children, young people and adults. Her literary career spans over 40
years during which she has published more than 70 books and has
received numerous awards for her works, some of which have been made
into films. Over here she is probably best known for her novel "Die
Wolke" which was widely read at schools throughout the country.
Gudrun Pausewang was born in the Sudetenland, the former German-
speaking areas of the Czech Republic from which she, together with her
mother and five brothers and sisters, was expelled in 1945. She became
a teacher and between 1956 and 1973 worked at German schools in Chile,
Venezuela and Colombia. The South American landscape and the mentality
of the local people were the motivating factors for her first novel
"Rio Amargo". Following the birth of her son she also started writing
for children and young people. Her commitment to peace and to fighting
poverty and hardship in the developing world have found expression in
many of her works.
Her books are an interesting read - she is an experienced presenter of
her work and an evening spent in her company will be an entertaining
and rewarding experience.
