Dear colleagues
Great to have a UK-based list at last. I too was intending to lurk, but
how can anyone resist definitions?! Here are a few that I happened to have
lying about ...
"A field of management responsible for the efficient and systematic control
of the creation, maintenance, use and disposition of records ?."
BS ISO 15489
Australian Standard AS 4390 (now sadly superceded by the ISO but which
remains my personal favourite)
"Records management is the discipline and organisational function of
managing records to meet operational business needs, accountability
requirements and community expectations."
"?a logical and practical approach to the creation, maintenance, use and
disposition of records and, therefore, of the information that those
records contain." (Penn, Pennix and Coulson)
Just as long as no-one wants to start the "what is a record?" debate ...
