medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. February) is the feast day of:
Mesrop (d. 439) Mesrop the Teacher was Isaac the Great's main colleague in
developing the Armenian church. He created an alphabet for writing
Armenian and translated the New Testament and book of Proverbs.
Barbatus of Benevento (d. 682) Barbatus became a priest in Benevento and
was immediately employed by the bishop as a preacher. He was a stalwart
opponent of folk religious practices, a stand that led to his failure as a
parish priest. But he became bishop of Benevento in 663, and enjoyed
considerable success in halting "superstition," thanks espeically to his
gift of prophecy.
Beatus of Liebana (d. 789) The Spanish monk and priest Beatus was an
active opponent of the Adoptionist heresy. After the formal condemnation
of Adoptionism, B retired to the monastery of Valcavado, where he wrote his
famed commentary on the book of Revelation.
Belina of Troyes (d. 1135) Belina was a peasant woman who lived near
Troyes. The lord of the area tried to rape her, and killed her when she
resisted. She was canonized in 1203.
Conrad of Piacenza (d. 1351 or 1354) Conrad was a nobleman. When hunting
one day, he caused an accident: a fire lit to scare game into the open got
out of control and burned several fields and homes. When an innocent man
was accused of the arson, Conrad confessed it, and he and his wife nearly
impoverished themselves to pay the damages. Thereupon the couple gave the
rest of their goods to th poor; Conrad became a hermit following the
Franciscan rule, and his wife became a Poor Clare. She then disappears
from history, but he became a famous miracle worker. 1000's flocked to him
for help with disease, famine, etc.
