"figurationen. gender literature culture" is a journal in the field of
Cultural and Gender Studies which was founded in 2000. It is edited by
Barbara Naumann, Professor of German literature at the University of
Zurich, and appears twice a year with Böhlau-Verlag. The journal offers
a forum for current discussions on literature, culture, and gender. It
is published in thematic issues which are guest-edited by scholars of
outstanding reputation in their respective fields. Articles are in
German or English. The subtitle, "gender literature culture", outlines
the academic profile of the journal: drawing on cultural, literary,
gendered and rhetorical interests, it contributes to current
discussions in the humanities and extends to the fields of natural
sciences and jurisprudence. The emphasis on cultural theory also seeks
to offer new perspectives on aspects of everyday cultural phenomena and
on non-academic topics (e.g., fashion and beauty). In addition to this,
"figurationen" continually presents pieces of original literary writing
or a work of visual art under the heading „FIGURationen".
Topics of recent (and mostly still available) issues include women and
law, fashion/art, seduction, beauty, masculinity in crisis, and the
aesthetics of the political. Former editors are Sander L. Gilman,
Gabriele Brandstetter, Peter Körte, and Ingeborg Harms; contributing
authors have included Teresa de Lauretis, Elisabeth Bronfen, Inge
Stephan, Geoffrey H. Hartman, Shoshana Felman, Judith Butler, Sigrid
Weigel, Hartmut Böhme, Claudia Schmölders, Ingeborg Harms, Susan
Jeffords, Abigail Solomon-Godeau, Beat Wyss, Slavoj Zizek. Also,
artists such as Yoko Tawada, Aris Fioretos, and Elfriede Jelinek have
published in this journal.
