I'm a wheelchair user and just get on with almost any group on demos I supporrt,although I prefer to go with some friends. Many wheelchair users do this.
AS for wheelchair users at the front, well there was an incident in Spain in the 1970's [certainly before 76] (in the later years of Franco). A march was banned by the authorities, the demonstrators path was blocked by the Spanish Police. Wheelchair users headed the march, while the police didn't normally mind hitting demonstrators with batons, they didn't want to be photographed attacking wheelchair users. So the wheelchair users inched onward, so the Police had to move back and eventually the demonstration succeeded it's peaceful objective.
