Ian, I think we may have met at a UKAEA 'electronic records' workshop in Warrington last year? You would find it helpful to contact Sue Connell (UKAEA Records Officer) at Harwell. Sue manages the central secure archive there and is veryy knowledgeable about all things RM. Regards, Mike. Marsh.

Subject: mobile racking
First of all, many thanks for all the advice I have received about mobile
shelving. I never knew the subject was so complex. It has helped me move
forward. I should explain the background. Here on the UKAEA Dounreay site,
Caithnes, North of Scotland we have two archive buildings, one of which is
being knocked down soon. This contains 14,500 boxes and all will have to
be moved into the other building which contains 7,000 boxes. Across the
whole site which is say 2 sq miles there are another 4,000 boxes,
scattered around. The current plan is to use mobile shelving in one
building, obviously the one that remains and we hope to have enough space
for 30,000 boxes. The height of the shelving is just under 3M. We were
planning to aim for BS 5454 but this will require an extension to our
budget which we haven't got. Also we only have a few months to act.
I am relatively new to this game, although I have worked at Dounreay for
over 20 years, most of the time has been as a scientific glassblower. It
may seem strange for a career move such as this to happen but my glass
work shop was next to the archives when the archives expanded at the
expense of the research facility. As we head for nuclear decommissioning
records appear to become more and more important. I confess to having no
qualifications as a Records Manager and to most of you must appear as very
naive. I have learnt as I have experienced so please be preapred for
further questions which may appear to be simple to most.
On wednesday I am going to PRO at Kew to learn out to prepare files for
depositing, should be fun.
