For the early 2" to the mile OS maps of circa 1815 I have obtained four
digitised coloured originals from the British Library on CD at about £30 per
map (you will need the map number). Using photoshop I cropped the images to
cover the Milton Keynes area and also turned the image to as near as grid
north as possible. These were imported into MapInfo and located by fixing
three points on the 1815 map and three corresponding points on the modern
OS. There was a degree of fine tuning required in adjusting the angle to get
grid north which varied from map to map and finding good 'anchorage'
points.(To achieve angle adjustment I printed both maps together and
calculated the angular difference of a feature such as a straight road and
made the adjustment in Photoshop) This took an afternoon for all four. I
did not bother to try an get a seamless layer but brought them altogether in
workspace and turn them off an on as required.
I have told several ALGAO members what I have done and have they have told
me that it doesn't work. Admittedly some roads are probably as much as 30m
(metres not miles) out in some areas but in others they fit well and I even
have areas where the field boundaries fit well (something that is certainly
not supposed to happen!) Perhaps there was a reasonably competent surveyor
in North Buckinghamshire. What it does provide me with is a pre-railway map
with buildings and stone walls marked in red which I find useful on
occasions. I am not saying that it will work well in all areas but it may be
worth a try.

Subject: Digital Historic OS maps - Advice wanted
Can I ask for advice about getting old OS maps for use on our GIS - is there
more than one way to obtain them or is Landmark the only source? Is there
any way of making it more affordable?
Thanks
