INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
MEDITERRANEAN IDENTITIES AND EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION
University of Salerno, Italy
19-20 February 2003
The Department of Sociology and Political Science at the University of
Salerno, in collaboration with the Italian Sociological Association, the
Maison des Sciences de l'homme, ARELA (Association for Research on Latin
American Countries) and the Italian Sociological Association, will host an
international conference on the theme of "Mediterranean Identities and
European Constitution" at the University of Salerno, in Southern Italy, on
the 19th and 20th of February 2003.
The conference will be concerned with the following issues:
- How can an expanded Europe - such as that anticipated by the enlargement
towards Central and Eastern Europe - encourage, safeguard and exalt the
traditions, cultures and identities of the Mediterranean?
- What is the role of the societies, regions and local systems of the
Mediterranean within an enlarged Europe?
- What type of constitution is most appropriate to the new Europe?
- What is the best form of state - a federation of states? A confederation?
A strong state that imposes a more rapid pace upon economic, political and
military integration?
- What solutions do each of these possibilities offer to the questions that
have been raised from all sides in relation to integration and inclusion?
The conference "Mediterranean Identities and European Constitution"
proposes to explore the aforementioned themes with the participation of
Italian as well as foreign researchers. It will be organised into three
strands:
- The first strand, The State and European Constitution, is dedicated to
discussions and proposals regarding the fundamental characteristics of
European construction.
- The second strand, Europe and the Regions and Local Systems of the
Mediterranean, is dedicated to the problems facing the Mediterranean
regions (whether Italian, French, Spanish, Greek, Turkish or Balcan) and
their role within the new European political formation. In this strand it
is also proposed to discuss the relationship between 'Europe of the
regions' and the North African states that lie on the other side of the
Mediterranean.
- The third strand, Images and Social Representations of Europe, will be
concerned with images and social representations of Europe.
