Hi Cath
the section I was referring to comes towards the end of part one Chapter 8 - starting 'He thought of himself in 1962 ... to ....nobility of mankind'
happy reading

This has been a very useful discussion (my to-read list nicely expanded,
thanks!)--
one query: I have an American ed. of Atonement and can't find the passage
mentioned. Could you give us Part and chapter, please?
<<Ian McEwans Atonement, which as well as having quite a lot about nursing
in wartime Britain also contains (on p92-93 of the hardback) an interesting
reflection on how the hero thinks his recently attained degree in English
Lit would prepare him for a career in medicine. This could be a good short
piece to discuss in class.>>
Thanks,
Cath
