Dear Quinton
In general I would confess that a student approaching us would be redirected probably to the NMRS either to refine their data request or to use this source instead. A bit of an avoidance tactic.
However when we have had such large data requests (eg large linear routes or whole coastline studies) our standard approach is to determine the fields of data that will be of use to the client and then export a series of the Dublin standard exports from HBSMR. We would then provide this on CD with a text guidance on how to reconstruct these tables back into an access database for them to query/use.
Generally anything that is getting to more than say 20 pages we try to issue digitally as i. labour saving ii. environmentally friendly iii. more useful to many clients as they don't have to re-input your data for their use. Any data for commercial use is charged based on the time taken to extract (hourly rate exc VAT, currently £65, minimum 1 hour charge).
If we had any doubts as to the use this dataset would be used for we would take steps to have written agreements on the use and timed destruction / return of the data. For research we also normally require the student to share the results of their studies that pertain to Fife with us.
Hope this of some use
Yours
Tom
