I was recently in Russia collecting interviews for a paper and had taken a
digital recorder and my laptop with me. The digital recorder worked well
enough, although the sound quality was better with a minidisk, however I did
run into a problem about a month into my fieldwork. My computer started having
problems and I was unable to download my interviews from the digital recorder
to burn them to a CD. Which meant that I had to stop using my recorder. I
subsequently purchased a Minidisk recorder which worked wonderfully and had the
advantage of an immediate back up in the form of the minidisk itself. I still
have to download these to my computer to transcribe but if you are in an area
without alot of technical support I would suggest something that gives you some
form of removable storage.
