Are people in public libraries aware of this opportunity from the Ordnance
Survey? Seems useful but not widely known. Contact details for the OS are
included.
There are two attachments here from the OS. Before list members complain at
this, I realise that it is against protocol to send attachments through the
list, but they are useful and I hope this will be acceptable in this instance.
Both are pdf's and have not caused us any problems here

Subject: OS Select - New Service for Libraries
Author: "Douglas Eamer" <[log in to unmask]>
Date: 09/01/03 10:14
Ordnance Survey is a government agency which provides the OS Land Ranger and
Explorer maps lent and sold by most library services in the UK.
We believe that people will gradually change from buying paper maps to ordering
personalised maps over the web and so we have a new service called OS Select
that uses web-based terminals to provide a personalised map service, based on
the OS Land Ranger maps, which centres the map on any site in the UK the
customer chooses.
The map can be ordered over the web or by completing the form in a leaflet or by
phone. We propose that a library displays a map, supplied by us, site centred on
each library, with some leaflets about OS Select which encourages its customers
to order their map using the library's web-enabled terminals. However, even if
the customer elects to complete the form, or phone directly, the library service
name will still be associated with the order and the library service is credited
with £3 for each map sold. The customer's unique map is supplied flat and
delivered in a tube. It can then be framed or folded.
The price of each map is £14.49 plus £2.50 P&P and is approximately 92cms by
107cms at 1:50,000 scale.
The advantages for the library are:-
1. It provides an additional service for their customers through the web
terminals.
2. The library receives a commission on each map sold of £3.
3. The library does not have to order or pay for stock.
4. The process places no significant workload on the library staff.
OS Select is a new service that has been available for a few months. The process
to link the library website to the OS Select Website is a line of code and a
small icon supplied by Ordnance Survey. The minimum requirements that the
Library needs is Internet-enabled terminals with Internet Explorer or Netscape
(current or nearest previous version) and Java plug-ins.
In January 2003 we will be adding 1" scale Historical maps which uses a similar
procedure under the same commercial terms to meet the needs for enquiries about
genealogical surveys. In the spring of 2003 we expect to be adding a more
detailed Explorer style map.
