Dear Friends
REGIONAL TRAINING SESSIONS FOR DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION CENTRES (and teachers)
You may be aware that the Department for International Development has
extended the funding offered to NEAD's 'Just Business' project for two
years from April 2002. One of the key features of the project extension is
an idea to make the project's work sustainable by encouraging other
Development Education Centres to take on the challenge of working with
Business Studies and Economics teachers, LEAs and training institutions in
their own areas. It is probable that most DECs have the skills and
expertise to engage in this work, which is not significantly different to
work they are already doing - just tailored slightly differently for the
particular specialist audience. 'Just Business' has funding available to
run a number of regional training events for DECs staff and teachers (FREE
of charge) to familiarise them with the specific requirements of Economics
and Business Studies teachers, and the 'Just Business' approach. It is
hoped that DEC practitioners would then be able to offer their services to
their local institutions, and that their DECs would be able to secure
payment locally for this work, thereby adding to their income.
'Just Business' would support local DECs work by continuing to provide the
'Just Business' website, giving advice on suitable development education
resources for the target group, and allowing the use of the 'Just Business'
name by local DECs as a promotional tool. We could also promote local
events via the website and the termly 'Just Business' newsletter
(circulation 3,000 nationally). There would be no charge to local DECs for
these services. THESE EVENTS ARE ALSO OPEN TO TEACHERS.

A catastrophe is brewing for 25 million coffee farmers....
Whenever you buy a jar of coffee, most of the money you pay goes to the
world's big four coffee roasters. The farmers who grew the crop are paid
much less than it costs to produce it. Now, with over-supply causing the
price of coffee to plummet to a 30 year low, the world's coffee industry is
in a severe crisis. Today, 25 million coffee farmers face ruin. The price
they receive for coffee is now so low - just over half of what they were
getting three years ago - that they can no longer buy enough food for their
families, buy medicines, or afford to send their children to school. As
coffee farmer Lawrence Seguya puts it: "We grow the crop with our sweat,
and sell it for nothing."
How can this catastrophe be averted? Come to the public meeting. Hear what
some of the major players in the coffee industry have to say. Put your
questions to them. Speakers include: Joanna Scott, Corporate Affairs
Director, UK and Ireland, Kraft Foods, David Drew MP for Stroud, Vice Chair
All Party Group on Corporate Social Responsibility, Sophia Tickell, Author
of Oxfam Coffee Report, 'Mugged'. Other invited speakers include
representatives of a multinational coffee company and a speaker from the
Co-op.
All welcome. Admission free. Organised by Oxfam and the Co-op. For more
information: Ring Roger James at Oxfam, on 0117 9166473, or Nicola Cade at
