AAH! But who defines what should be expected of a 'radio' in the first place????
<<< Larry Arnold <[log in to unmask]> 1/20 6:53p >>>
Imagine one of those old fashioned Radios with the fancy walnut cases and
the valves inside.
Now imagine that soemeone had dropped it and the case was all broken, it
might look a mess on the outside and all the switches and dials were broken,
but then you may be able to switch it on and find that it still works as a
radio.
Then again, you might drop it and the case stands up well but all the valves
inside are broken or shaken, then it looks fine but does not funtion as a
radio at all,
Then imagine that the radio were fine on the outside and all the proper
components were there inside, but wired up in the wrong order. Again it may
not funtion at all well as a radio, but then again it might work but not as
you expect it. It might actually be better at recieving a foreign station
than an ordinary radio, but be unable to recieve your local one that you
wanted to listen to.
I think many of us who are neuro diverse are like that last radio. that is
the analogy of neurological difference, we may not have obvious lesions in
our brains but they are in the way we have developed genetically be
differently wired and this does affect who an what we are and how we
percieve and relate to the world.
Anyway I think Simon Stevens has effectively shot himself in the foot as far
as tolerence is concerned. If he expresses a view that a dyslexics needs are
irrelevant and just a nuisance to him, then what reason has he given for
anyone to have regard for his needs.
I have in my time been involved in issues that have little to do with neuro
diversity over access and benefits and social services, and have lived in a
very real world why should I not turn my attention to people who share my
problems and try and do something for us, that does not diminish what I can
do elsewhere.
Should we all divide into a world where one "impairment" fights another in a
race for funds or failing to compromise where needs differ somewhat. Well
that is not he world I want. I want a world of solidarity.
Let us not be like pre apartheid South Africa with its multiple categories
of non whites
Simon Stevens can rant on about "I might as well die now" I can tell you
many of us have been there and done that literally.
Does anyone really think we have significant advantages in the employment
world. does it matter if you put CP or Dyslexia, or Epilepsy or Tourettes on
an application form, the result will be the same, not wanted here!
