UM-03: 9th International Conference on User Modeling
                 Doctoral Consortium
                   Call for Papers

The User Modeling conference series is the major forum for
presentation and discussion of latest developments in academic
research on user modeling and adaptive systems as well as industrial
experience in deploying adaptive and personalized systems in
"real-world" applications. The International User Modeling Conferences
bring together researchers and practitioners from a variety of fields
including artificial intelligence, linguistics, psychology, and
human-computer interaction. This conference series is characterized by
a high quality technical program and by lively discussions in a

Continuing a tradition that started in 1994, the UM-03 Doctoral
Consortium aims to provide qualified Ph.D. students with the
opportunity to present their on-going research to the UM community.
The Doctoral Consortium is a great forum to receive useful feedback
from a knowledgeable audience, to exchange ideas, compare approaches
and meet fellow researchers in the field.  Submissions should describe
Ph.D. research that is at a stage where feedback from the broader UM
community might be of value. Thus, we expect students to be close to
make their research proposal, or to have made it but have at least a
year of work remaining before completion of their thesis. Submissions
must be a maximum of three pages (including references) and should
clearly specify:

   i. the problem(s) that the proposed research is addressing,
  ii. the main contribution(s) of the research to the UM field,
iii. the proposed solution(s), including a brief description of work
      already done and a tentative plan for future work.

Submission deadline: Jan. 25, 2003
Submission format:
    A. maximum of 3 pages (including references)
    B. Please stay as close as possible to the formatting instructions
       available at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html
       In particular, papers must adhere to the following:
       1. The printing area of each page should be 122mm by 193mm.
       2. Use 10 point type for the names of authors, and 9 point
          type for their addresses and the abstract.
       3. Use 10 point type and single line spacing for the main
          body of the paper.  Computer Modern Roman or Times fonts
          are preferred.
Submission instructions:
       1. Papers should be submitted as electronic pdf files.  If
          electronic submission in pdf form will be problematic, please

          alternatives, including hardcopy.
       2. Please send the submission on or before Jan. 25, 2003
          as an attachment to an email message to both

          The subject line of the email message should be
          "Submission: UM Doctoral Consortium"
       3. You will receive a response within three days confirming
          that we received your submission and were able to print it.
