A member of the list wrote me a long and private note concerning about my post dated March 6, 2003.
Of course it would be improper to attach that post, but I thought it raised some issues that I think worth
discussing in public.
I think we need to do better in taking criticisms.
As little as I know, I understand in the world of inquiry, everything is subject to question,
although not everything at the same time, as Pierce once pointed out. From intention,
to subject matter, conceptualization, methodology and everything else that are part of inquiry.
My intention to question was being questioned by Allan Reese at one point. I was hurt of course.
But pain gets in a way of learning, as a net-pal once told me. We must not let emotion take over.
So in response to this member, I would say my last note is NOT an indication that
I am unable to appreciate David Durling’s contribution to doctoral education in design or
design research in general. I appreciate everything David Durling has done.
And he has been very helpful to me and I am thankful. But that has nothing to do with my last note.
To think that questioning David Durling’s post equals questioning his ability or his personality
mistakes the nature of genuine inquiry. In front of truth, everyone is nobody.
And for the record, David Sless never never never asked to close the thread on creativity.
He made a very critical comment. So, can we not take it?
And Yes, David Sless can be very irritating , I can be extremely irritating and so is everybody else
in the eyes of certain others. So what is the big deal?
And yes, I admit my last post might have caused tension and discomfort and I am sorry.
But it was necessary. And for the record, I asked David Durling questions. I recognized
the possibility of complete misinterpretation and the consequences that it caused.
Here I think I am a bit better than some others on the list who have come before me
and who are supposed to be the leaders of the field.
And to the person who sent me the private note: I like you, you have been very kind and helpful to me.
And for the record, I told many people what I have just told you. But that has nothing to do with inquiry.
Rosan.
