The Aerospace Corporation has a position opening at its El Segundo, CA facility for a Ph. D. in physics, chemistry, engineering, or related field
with experience in optical physics and laser research (preferably ultra-fast lasers and amplifier systems). The Aerospace Corporation is a private,
non-profit organization that operates a FFRDC (Federally Funded Research and Development Center) for the Department of Defense (DoD). The
purposes of the corporation are exclusively scientific: to provide research, development, and advisory services. The corporation's primary
customer is the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) of Air Force Space Command, although work is performed for other agencies,
international organizations, and governments in the national interest.
See the corporate web page at http://www.aero.org/ for more information.
Responsibilities
The Aerospace Corporation is seeking a highly qualified scientist or engineer to perform basic and applied research in optical physics and laser
technology development. The successful applicant will lead an ongoing effort to employ high intensity ultrashort-pulse lasers for x-ray generation,
radiation effects testing of microelectronics and laser remote sensing, and initiate and develop new research efforts in these general areas. The
Photonics Technology Department has ongoing research activities in the areas of laser remote sensing of the atmosphere, laser radar, optical
propagation through turbulent media, ultrafast phenomena, terawatt laser systems, short-pulse x-ray systems,
radiation-induced single event effects in microelectronics, atomic physics, atomic clocks, laser cooling of atomic systems, stochastic processes
in quantum systems, quantum optics, sensing of biological and chemical materials, fiber optic sensors, optical communications, laser
development and nonlinear optics. The successful applicant will be encouraged to participate and contribute to these research activities and
support systems engineering activities relevant to programs at the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile System Center, and the National
Reconnaissance Office.
Qualifications
U.S.citizenship required. Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, engineering, or related field with strong experience in optical physics and laser research
(minimum two years for MTS; minimum five years for Sr. MTS); post-doctoral experience desired. Background in ultrafast and high power laser
systems is desirable. The successful candidate will have a record of excellence in the experimental research, as demonstrated in the quantity
and quality of publications in prestigious scientific and technical journals. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. Ability to
obtain Secret clearance required.
