Hi Group
In research into collieries here in Newcastle NSW Australia around 1870, I have come upon two shafts (Hamilton Pit and Ferndale No 1 Pit) which had the headsheave pullies set back-to-back , or in line... (as opposed to the conventional side-by-side arrangement)
I have seen this arrangement in photos of British pits of that era (I am not referring to modern friction winder instalaltions) and I am interested in the likely rason for such divergence from the norm...
The shafts in question were quite shallow ...no more than 300 ft ... was it perhaps something to do with reducting the fleet angle of flat ropes.
Anyone have any suggestions ?.
Regards
John
