An acquaintance works there. I saw him Friday and he confirmed that the mine's new owners were making economies and that redundancies were likely. He did not believe that the mine itself was under threat. He did however wonder whether the long underground haulage ( they are now apparently almost under Whitby) and the quality of some ore could be giving problems. When the mine began it was expected to provide twenty years employment and has so far done 30. If the surface building etc were to go it would be a great improvement to a spectacular view though I acknowledge the loss of an interesting place and a spectacular railway line.
