Dear Two Jims'!
The latter Jim is correct, much depends on the use of dibs or declines. At
the u/g quarries I used to own there were two u/g declines or inclines (both
these names apply in this instance). Our costs would have been much higher
had we been vertical: just one reason being that the cable was allowed a
longer life, and more time in 'cutting' and 'changing round'. The Kimberley
was 750' and the Honister was about 800' I think.
The mines in Weardale preferred declines as the favoured method of haulage
due to cost reasons, even though most of the veins worked towards the end
were vertical.
