Further to my last posting connected with Bullivant, I think a bit of history
on these is also of importance, since, without same, this method of transport
would not have existed.

I quote from the NOTICE:-

The Hauling and Hoisting Ropes manufactured by Messrs. Bullivant & Co.Ltd,
have obtained a world-wide reputation. Where brought in competition with
ropes of other makers, such as in the case of the Tramway Companies at
Melbourne, at Lisbon, and those owned by the Sydney Corporation, they have
shewn their great superiority.
Messrs.Bullivant & Co. were the Inventors of Flexible Steel Wire Rope
suitable for Cranes, Lifts, Hoists, and similar purposes. It is unnecessary
to give testimonials, their well-known excellency and uniformity being well
established.
In this section of the catalogue, instances are given to shew Wire Ropes have
been used for such purposes, and therefore it is only now that the results of
actual experience can be given.
Messrs.Bullivant & Co.Ltd, manufacture a uniform quality of Rope for the
above purposes, and that of the very highest excellence that can be made.
The greatest care is taken in the selection of material, and all wire is most
thoroughly tested before it is worked into rope.
The Testing establishment at Messrs.Bullivant & Co.'s Works is unique. They
have, at present, Machinery for testing ropes to fracture up to 120 tons
breaking strain, and have, in the course of construction, an enlarged Testing
Machine which will test ropes up to 350 tons. In addition to this there are a
number of Machines of the most approved and modern make for testing the
individual wires both by tension and torsion, and men specially trained for
this work are employed exclusively in this department.

Eight types of Mining and Hauling rope are detailed.
LAID ROPE (4 types)
FORMED ROPE
FLEXIBLE STEEL WIRE ROPE
EXTRA FLEXIBLE STEEL WIRE ROPE
SPECIAL EXTRA FLEXIBLE WIRE ROPE (2 types)
CABLE-LAID ROPE

A guide as to how long Bullivant had been making these ropes is taken from
just one testimonial:-

"Gentlemen,- I gladly bear testimony to the uniform excellence of the Ropes
that you have supplied for lifting Vessels sunk in the Thames.
I first began using your Ropes in 1880. During the twenty years you have been
supplying them I have never had any cause of complaint on any goods that you
have supplied.
Some of the Ropes that you supplied in 1880 are still in use.
During the last fifteen years I have raised 97 Steamers of tonnage varying
from 500 to 2000 tons; 61 Sailing Vessels, total tonnage 10,132; and 438
Barges, total tonnage 17,232.
I am more than satisfied with the Patent Stoppers that you fitted to the
special craft by the Thames conservancy. They not only hold securely, but the
Ropes can be slacked away from them with the greatest ease, and although they
have been in use for seventeen years they are still perfectly effective.
Yrs.faithfly. Charles Wood. Superintendent of moorings for the Thames
Conservancy. 1900.

Bullivant had 3 Agencies in Australia, and another company: BULLIVANT'S
AUSTRALIAN CO.LTD, H.E.Farmer Mgr..: 3 in New Zealand, 3 in India, 2 in
S.Africa, most European countries, 2 in Canada, and 6 in GB (all at main
ports).

Also, Ships' Rigging supplied ready for going over the Masthead.

On one leading page, it is interesting to read:-
Inventors and Patentees of Torpedo Defence Nets, and of Bullivants' System of
Protecting Vessels from the attack of Locomotive and other Torpedoes.

So, all in all, with one thing and another, they had everything covered!

Please note, I made a mistake in the date for some reason, and the cat. date
is 1906 and NOT 1905.
