There are still places remaining on the CALIM/NoWAL (Consortium of Academic
Libraries in Manchester/North West Academic Libraries) Written Communication Skills
course. This course forms part of the CALIM/NoWAL administered CLIP (Certificate in
Library and Information Practice) programme.
This unit is aimed at helping staff working within a Library/Information/IT service
improve their written communication skills.
This unit covers the following areas:
The different types of written communication.
The importance of presenting written communication in an appropriate form and the
possible consequences of presenting it in an inappropriate format.
The difference between presenting written information for a formal and informal
audience.
The factors within written communication that may impact upon equal opportunities
and the role of written communication in working towards equality of opportunity.
The importance of using different styles of writing.
How to structure different types of written communication and appreciate the role of
structure in aiding readers understanding.
Techniques for making meaning clear and accurate.
At the end of the unit participants will:
Understand the different types of written communication.
Identify appropriate forms of presenting information for different purposes and
audiences.
Develop an understanding of different styles of writing to suit different purposes.
Understand how to structure written materials effectively.
Develop an understanding of how to make writing clear.
The cost of the course is £300. This covers 15 hours of training and 2 hours of tutorial
support as well as registration with the GMOCN (Greater Manchester Open College
Network) and the awarding of a certificate.
The timetable is as follows.

22/05/2003 10.00 – 13.00
All sessions are located in central Manchester.
