MUSEUM PRACTICE SEMINAR
Virtual Matters:
Digitising the museum
Charity Centre, 24 Stephenson Way, Euston, London
11th July 2003
1015- 1515
Convened by the Museums Computer Group for the Museums Association
The digital revolution is well underway in museums. Most now have a website
and many have obtained funding from sources such as the New Opportunities
Fund to create content-rich sites. Some museums have transformed the way
they manage their collections and communicate with the public using the
power of digital technology. But what are the longer-term implications of
building virtual collections? And what must museums do to fully exploit the
communication and collection management potential of their digital
collections?
This practical seminar will help you look beyond one-off projects and
consider:
· the skills and resources needed to develop, manage and sustain
digital collections in the longer-term
· the effects of digitisation on the organisation and working
practices of museums
· the strategies needed to capitalise on the opportunities offered
by digital collections
· the role of evaluation in developing digital content and
assessing its effectiveness and improving accessibility.
Speakers include:
Alex Morrison
Managing Director, Cognitive Applications
Jon Pratty
Editor, 24 Hour Museum
Linda Spurdle
Digitisation Project Leader, Tyne & Wear Museums
David Dawson
Senior ICT Adviser, Resource
