Dear Colleagues,

A post-doctoral research associate position requiring extensive use of
FE modelling on parallel machines is available at the School of
Engineering at Durham University for 2 years from November 2003. Details
below:

Parametric studies of multiple tunnelling in soft ground
2 Year Fixed Term from 1st November 2003 (RA1A, £20,311)

This two-year EPSRC funded post involves 3D finite element modelling of
multiple tunnel construction in soft ground. The research will involve
development of an existing Fortran FE code for parallel operation,
training on the UK high performance computing (HPC) resources (at
Manchester University) and analysis of output data. The Associate will
work with Dr Charles Augarde at Durham and Dr Alison Ramage of the
Department of Mathematics, Strathclyde University.

Applicants should have a Doctorate in civil or mechanical engineering,
applied mathematics or applied computer science (or equivalent research
experience), possess expertise in one or more of the following areas:
the development and use of finite element methods for the solution of
PDEs; structural mechanics; numerical linear algebra; numerical methods
in geotechnical engineering. Applicants must have experience of writing
programs using Fortran 90 or later.

Please send a full CV giving the names and addresses of two academic
referees (and copies of any relevant publications) to
Dr C.E. Augarde,
School of Engineering,
University of Durham,
