As a work place assessor for the DFE I often undertake assessments for people with hearing impairment and I am sure that when your student moves into the workplace support will be readilly available. Recently I undertook an assessment for a person who is profoundly deaf who worked in a special care unit for individuals with severe disabilities which could mainifest as behavioural problems in certain circumstances. We were able to introduce a range of technology to support the individual in every aspect of their work. I am confident that similar support can be supplied to your student at the appropriate time.
The important thing is for an application to be made to JobCentre Plus within 6 weeks of the person entering employment. If that is done then all the cost of equiping the individual is meet by the Access to Work Scheme.
If I can be of any further help you can contact me of list or phone me on 01752 232695.
Regards
Terry Hart

Subject: deaf child care student
We have a student who has applied to do a child care course ( she is 16 )
and who is profoundly deaf.
We can provide support for her but the course team are concerned that she
will not be able to communicate well enough with the children in her care
and will not be able to, for example, hear a baby crying. I'm very keen for
her to succeed - and I'd be grateful if you could let me know of any similar
cases and how these difficulties were overcome. I'd also be grateful for any
information as to professional bodies who may be able to help and advise
many thanks
Clare
