Many thanks for this, Saundra. I hope you don't mind that I have creditted
Reuters with the source of this data on our website? It was a great find,
and I think I speak for all of us with an external remit when I thank you
for it.
It's interesting how, when one compiles things that other sources get
contradicted. I wish there was a real Euro repository for this information.
But, until there is, I'm moving heaven and earth to make the information we
hold as authoritative as possible.
There will be more developments on our page at
http://www.marketimprove.com/hotnews/SI_Schedule.html as soon as I can get
them sorted out. Meanwhile do all please note that it is a living document
and is as correct as I can make it. But that there are bound to be
anomalies. Still, Belgium now features for the first time! Now let me see,
where is Brussels? Ah yes......

Subject: [data-protection] article: EU states under pressure over Net
privacy law
Greetings from way across the pond
Like many of you I am attempting to monitor the individual implementation of
the Privacy and Communications Directive. I just came across this article
which I thought others of you would be interested in reading.

Brussels - The European Commission said on Friday it had started legal
action against nine European Union (EU) states for failing to write into
national law new rules to boost electronic privacy in the 15-nation bloc.
The EU executive said it had acted against Germany, France, Belgium, the
Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, Sweden, Luxembourg and Finland as they all
missed an October 31 deadline for implementation of the rules, known as the
e-privacy directive.
The directive introduces stricter protection of personal data on the
Internet and contains provisions to fight spam.
"I urge those member states that have not yet transposed this directive to
complete the task with the minimum of further delay," European Commissioner
Erkki Liikanen, who is responsible for information society issues, said in a
statement.
'They all missed an October 31 deadline'
The Commission's move is the first step of legal action that could end in
the European Court of Justice, the EU's top court. EU states have two months
to address the Commission's concerns.
The EU executive is also set to issue an ultimatum to seven EU states on
December 16 for failing to implement wide-ranging rules to boost competition
for the electronic communications sector.
The EU executive is stepping up pressure on member states in hope of
accelerating the introduction of EU-wide rules for electronic communications
to boost competitiveness in the bloc.
The rules are intended to cut red tape and allow new entrants easier access
to all markets in the telecoms sector, often dominated by former state-owned
companies.
The action would take the form of a reasoned opinion, the last step before
the EU's executive takes states to court.
