Call For Papers
Persia and the Greeks: Reactions and Receptions

Speakers are invited to contribute to the above panel, as part of the larger
Celtic Conference in Classics’ meeting at the University of Haute-Bretagne,
Rennes, France, between 1st - 4th September 2004.
Papers on the themes of Achaemenid history and culture, Greek approaches to
Persian society, and the reception of Achaemenid Persia in other, later,
cultures are welcome. All papers should be of 30 or 40 minutes duration and
can be delivered in one of the conference languages, English or French.
The Celtic Conference in Classics, the first meetings of which took place in
2000 and 2002, is an independent collaboration aimed at enhancing the
quality and international profile of classics in the Celtic regions, and to
provide an additional attraction to scholars from overseas. The conference
rotates between the Celtic countries; it is administered from Swansea,
where it was founded.
Abstracts (in English or French) of 300 words (maximum) or enquiries should
be sent to both the panel organizers, Professor Christopher Tuplin,
University of Liverpool, ([log in to unmask]) and Dr Lloyd
Llewellyn-Jones, University of Exeter, ([log in to unmask]).

GREEKS AND ROMANS IN THE BUFFYVERSE: CLASSICAL THREADS IN FANTASY AND
SCIENCE FICTION ON CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION.

Following the successful and stimulating conference on The Ancient World on
Film in 2001 the Open University Classical Studies Department is putting on
a second Popular Culture and the Classics day organised jointly with the
Department of Ancient Classics, National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
This will be held in the Open University Classics' traditional midwinter
slot, taking place on Wednesday January 7th 2004 at Walton Hall, Milton
Keynes. The theme of the conference is summed up in the above title. The
morning sessions will consider classical languages, genres and culture as
refracted by / reflected in the American television series, Buffy the
Vampire Slayer and its current spin-off, Angel. Afternoon papers will
explore other contemporary TV texts that draw on materials from the ancient
world for their futuristic and supernatural scenarios. There may be space
in the day if you wish to offer a paper but please let us know by November
1st 2003 at the latest.

Contact Paula James (OU) or David Scourfield (NUI Maynooth) for further

It is with great pleasure that we announce the annual ISNS
Conference, to be held for the first time in Liverpool, UK, June
24th-27th 2004. The conference is organised by the Philosophy
Department, University of Liverpool. Liverpool has a long tradition
in the study of Neoplatonism, and although it is mostly known for The
Beatles, its football teams, and its Port (whence ships, in the
19th century, set sail for America, Canada, New Zealand, and
Australia), it is also a vibrant and cosmopolitan city as evidenced
by its recent nomination as European Capital of Culture for 2008.
At this stage, we invite proposals from anyone wishing to organise a
panel on any topic relevant to Neoplatonism and its background. Apart
from the main themes (metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics) we would
particularly welcome proposals on Neoplatonism/Platonism and English
and American Literature, Feminism, Pedagogy, and Spirituality.

Please submit your proposals by December 1st to: [log in to unmask]

We will be providing further information on accommodation and travel
and expect to issue a call for individual papers by December 20th.
We are looking forward to welcoming you all to Liverpool,
With best wishes,
Dr Yiota Vassilopoulou and Prof. Stephen R. L. Clark
