The Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL) is seeking to appoint
an
AMMAN RESEARCH OFFICER
to be based in Amman, Jordan.
The CBRL conducts research in the subject areas supported by the British
Academy in the countries of the Levant. It is expected that the successful
candidate will recently have completed a PhD in a relevant subject and will
be seeking to develop an active research interest in the countries of
Jordan, Syria or Lebanon, leading to the production of a significant
publication. Their duties will include research and assisting the Director
of the CBRL with the administration of the CBRL’s research facilities.
The CBRL is keen that its research personnel should maintain strong links
with universities in the UK. Applicants are therefore encouraged to propose
ways in which they might maintain a formal connection during their period
of appointment with a UK university department that is generally
acknowledged for the excellence of its research in the applicant’s
particular field. Any applicant wishing to do so may therefore include with
their application a letter from the head of the department to which they
intend being attached, setting out the research facilities that would be
extended to them in the event of their being appointed to the post. In
acknowledgement of such support, the CBRL would be prepared to grant the
Research Officer leave of absence from Amman for up to 3 months each year
(in addition to annual leave) in order that they could spend part of the
year based in the department of their sponsoring university.
The post is tenable for two years (with the possibility of extension to
three), subject to successful completion of an initial three-month
probationary period.
Salary will start at £15,265 and be based on the British Academy post-
doctoral scale, taking into account the provision of free accommodation in
Amman.
Application is open to any citizen of the European Union or holder of a
degree at graduate or post-graduate level from a university in the United
Kingdom.
Further details may be obtained from the CBRL Secretary, 10 Carlton House
Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH ([log in to unmask]) or the CBRL Amman
Administrator, CBRL, PO Box 519, Jubeiha, Amman 1194, Jordan
([log in to unmask])
Applications, including a curriculum vitae, a detailed research proposal, a
letter from the head of the candidate’s sponsoring department (if
appropriate) and two references, should reach the CBRL Secretary at the
British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH by 14 July 2003.
Interviews will be held in London on 11th August 2003
