Paul, am pasting below the answer I got from Greg Ritter at Bb when I asked
this question in December 2000. Luckily, at the time I only had 200 courses,
because as far as I know there hasn't been any change in how you need to do
it...

There are a few things that can cause the enroll button can appear:
1. The Default Enrollment Option (Admin > Manage Courses > Default Course
Buttons) is set to Self-Enrollment at the time of course creation.
2. The Default Enrollment Option is set to Instructor Enrollment, BUT the
Course Setting for Enrollment Options is set to Student Self-Enrollment.
3. The Default Enrollment Option is set to Instructor Enrollment AND the
Course Setting for Enrollment Options (Control Panel > Course Settings >
Enrollment Options) is set to Instructor/Admin Enrollment AND the "E-mail
Instructors when Students request enrollment" option is checked.
In this last case the Enroll button operates as an enrollment *request*
only. It sends an email to the Instructor and then the Instructor can choose
to accept or decline the enrollment request.
What has apparently happened with this client is at some point they probably
had the Default Enrollment Option set to self-enrollment, OR they had the
System Override to for Allow Instructors to Change Enrollment Option set to
allow and instructors changed it to self-enrollment or instructor enrollment
upon request.
In all instances, THERE IS NO SYSTEM-WIDE OVERRIDE for the enrollment
button. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to fix this
retroactively except to modify each individual course via the individual
course's Control Panel to make sure (a) the Enrollment Option is set to
Instructor Enrollment and (b) the Instructor Enrollment option does not have
the request option checked. Before these settings can be modified the system
administrator will probably have to make sure that the System Override for
Allow Instructors to Change Enrollment Option is set to Allow before anyone
(instructor or admin) can modify an individual course's settings through the
Control Panel.

Subject: Disable Enrol on Course Catalog
***************************************************************************
This e-mail message has been scanned for viruses and unacceptable content.
***************************************************************************
We've just started categorisising courses and want to enable the Course
Catalog option. How does one:
1. Disable or enable the 'Enrol' and 'Preview' buttons that appear beside
courses on the list?
2. The course title is currently a link which allows previewing of the
course. Can that be disabled?
Any help much appreciated.
