Dear All,
Some general comments - updating.
At Bristol I'm starting scope a pilot study into using SMS with the VLE.
I'll probably go with a commercial operation - looking at £60.00 for 1000
SMS.
I'm currently thinking about using SMS alerts to inform students about a
new announcement, new discussion board contribution, grades have been
upgraded etc., the idea is to use simply alerts to encourage the students
to visit the course.
I'd be interested in John's comments about the effectiveness of different
size SMS text with respect to student response. For instance, I'd imagine
small messages are more effective than long messages. This has implications
for the automated transfer of announcements from a VLE to a SMS
distribution method because we might need to suggest good practice in terms
of length of announcement etc.,
The idea of an SMS Server Link Building Block sounds a very good idea.
Perhaps as a community we should start thinking about sharing work load on
the development of Building Blocks ?
Cheers
Andy
