Hi there,
Although a newcomer to this list, I would like to put forward our
experiences in searching for a way to manage duplicate courses, and other
content management issues.
We have a multi-campus institution. Often different faculty teach the same
offering at the different campuses. Thus, while the core of the course is
the same, they want to add their own localisations. This is almost
impossible to do just in the framework of Blackboard's native course
functions. It works on some levels - eg you could insert a link to a
content item in another course - but doesn't on others - eg quizzes,
because the student must be enrolled in that course. Managing enrolments
in the "meta" course gets ugly really fast.
So we went through the process of selecting a dedicated content management
system. The content would then be delivered through the Blackboard course
interface.
An important criteria was indeed the seamlessness of operations between the
content management system and Blackboard. There are many content/document
management systems out there (indeed, we also run Domino.Doc here) but
developing those interfaces is timeconsuming and expensive. However, we
also valued flexibility and customisability, so we were looking for an off-
the-shelf integrated product that would also allow us room for extension.
Eg custom workflows, metadata schemae, etc.
Our tendering process shortlisted 4 companies, and it then came down to a 2
horse race. We interrogated both HarvestRoad and Concord in detail about
their products, and they both have strengths and weaknesses. In the end,
we decided to choose HarvestRoad's LCMS product, and we are currently
engaging in a close partnership to extend this to meet Griffith's specific
needs.
Our first task is to tackle migration of our existing 1000+ courses - so I
can't give you too many insights into running this combination in
production yet. :-)
Cheers,
Tracy
