Gothic and the Long Fin de Siècle
The International Gothic Association (IGA) and the Association of Canadian
College and University Teachers of English (ACCUTE) are cooperating in the
form of a joint session at ACCUTE's annual conference at the Congress of
the
Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada (HSSFC). The Congress
brings together a wide variety of scholarly organizations for their annual
conferences. Submissions are now invited for the 2004 joint IGA/ACCUTE
session. The 2004 HSSFC Congress will be held at the University of Manitoba
in Winnipeg from 29 May to 5 June. Please note that all submitters must be
current members of ACCUTE; those included in the panel are encouraged to
become members of IGA for 2004.
This panel invites proposals on any aspect of Gothic during the long fin de
siècle (1880-1920). Topics might include Victorian Gothic, Gothic and
tele-technology, the relationship between the scientific and the literary
text, melodramatic representations of the Gothic body, the intersection of
sexuality and degeneration, theories of anthropology and evolution or
psychoanalysis and the occult.
Please send three copies of proposals (or completed papers) accompanied by
three copies of a 100-word abstract and a 50-word bio-bibliographical note
by November 15 to:

An email copy of the proposal or paper should also be submitted (in MS Word

Proposals should be 300-500 words in length. Completed papers should be no
longer than 12-13 double-spaced pages (20 minutes). A "Works Cited" section
should also be included.
