Tameside Archive Service is pleased to announce the launch of the Denton Roll of Honour
The Denton Roll of Honour is a searchable online database containing the names and service details of almost 2,300 First World War servicemen from the Denton area in Greater Manchester.
The servicemen's details were recorded by Denton Urban District Council in autumn/winter 1919. Enumerators were sent from house to house collecting the relevant information and residents were also encouraged to write to the council with the details of relatives who had served.
Fortunately the original notebooks in which the enumerators recorded the servicemen's details, along with many of the letters received by the Council, have survived. They are now part of the records of Denton UDC, held by the Tameside Archive Service and have been transcribed and entered onto a searchable database on the Tameside website at <http://public.tameside.gov.uk/soldierarch/f1077start.asp>. Thanks to generous funding support from the North West Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (NWMLAC), they will now be accessible to all those endeavouring to find details of Denton's First World War servicemen.
Members of the Denton Local History Society will give talks relating to Denton during both world wars at the launch, as well as playing oral history tapes of recollections of the period. All are welcome and wine and nibbles will be served.
