A2A Update, January 2003
The A2A Central Team is delighted to report that the Heritage Lottery Fund
has announced three more grants towards A2A projects: for Private Faces in
Public Places (a South East regional project); Communities in the Records
(the East of England regional project); and South West Family Fortunes (the
South West regional project).
Private Faces in Public Places aims to create new catalogues for, increase
public access to, and improve the care of a variety of 19th and 20th century
archives held by 6 museums and other organisations in the South East: the
Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Godalming Museum; Royal Holloway, University of
London; the Royal Logistics Corps Museum, Deepcut; the Tolkien Society; and
the Watts Gallery, Compton.
Communities in the Records, led by Norfolk Record Office, will contribute
over 22,000 existing catalogue pages to A2A. These catalogues provide access
to the archives - held by five local authority archives services and the
Holkham Estate - of civil and ecclesiastical parishes, diocesan
administration, Nonconformist congregations and a range of community
organisations in the East of England.
South West Family Fortunes will provide access via A2A to over 65,000
existing catalogue pages relating to family, estate, solicitors and business
archives in the South West Region. The project is led by Cornwall Record
Office, and 12 other regional institutions (museums, special repositories
and local authority record offices) are also taking part.
Planning for A2A Phase 3 is beginning. A key feature of A2A after March 2004
will be the development of interoperability and linking between the various
strands of the UK archives network. The first step towards this aim will be
liaison with other network strands and sites early this year, with a view to
identifying funding and partners. It is intended that Phase 3 will also
encompass further new cataloguing of significant archives and
retroconversion of existing paper and electronic catalogues, increased
digitisation of original documents, and further enhancement and promotion of
the A2A site.
The A2A database will next be updated early next month: details will be
provided in the next A2A Update - or visit our site at www.a2a.pro.gov.uk.
A2A is the English strand in the UK archives network: its database at
www.a2a.pro.gov.uk already contains the electronic equivalent of over
400,000 catalogue pages describing archives held across England in national,
local and specialist repositories and dating from the 900s to the present
day. The A2A programme will make a further 300,000 catalogue pages
available on the web by March 2004.
