Assistant Archivist
9 Month Contract
Wellcome Foundation Archives
c£19,500 + Benefits
The Wellcome Trust is one of the world’s largest biomedical research-
funding charities and its mission is to foster and promote research with
the aim of improving human and animal health.
The archives of the Wellcome Foundation pharmaceutical company, an
organisation that was originally the Trust’s sole asset base, spans the
early years of the Foundation from the 1880’s to the latter half of the
20th century and includes over 350 linear metres of product and advertising
literature, photographs, video films, and management and financial
records. This is a unique collection which historians and researchers have
expressed interest in consulting.
A substantial amount of the collection has already been catalogued and we
now have an opportunity for an Assistant Archivist to assist in the
completion of the project. This will include cataloguing, creation of
finding aids, and some enquiry work. The catalogue will also be linked to
complementary collections of papers of Sir Henry Wellcome held in the
Wellcome Library.
Working in a small team you will need to be self-motivated and your
patience, communication skills and flexible approach will be of prime
importance.
The successful candidate will need to have:
· a strong current knowledge of professional standards and practice;
· experience in a busy archival environment and of cataloguing on CALM or
other archive systems;
· one year’s experience of cataloguing and a postgraduate qualification in
archive administration;
· an interest in the history of medicine and/or experience in business
records would be an advantage.
To apply, please send a full CV with a covering letter, including your
daytime telephone number to Lesley Watson, The Wellcome Trust, 183 Euston
Road, London NW1 2BE by noon of 17 December 2003. Interviews will be held
in early January 2004.
