Cambridge Archaeological Unit recently excavated a Saxon
(7th century AD) cemetery in which one of the female graves
contained a copper bowl with what appears to be three
complete eels in the bottom.
Does anyone else know of similar grave finds in Britain or
Continental Europe or beyond?
Since eels can move over land, I wonder if we should
consider the possibility that the eels might have found
their way into the bowl without human agency. It certainly
does not seem likely, since the remains were found in the
lowest level of fill in the bowl.
Any ideas most welcome.
