Dear list members,
Below you will find an announcement of a Junior Scientist Workshop,
which I am happy to forward to the list, as requsted by the organisers.
Best regards and Happy Research

17th European Junior Scientist Workshop (EJSW)
Rehabilitation management of urban infrastructure networks
3. – 7. September 2003 in Neunzehnhain (near Dresden/Germany)
The Subject
The operation of urban infrastructure networks is facing fundamental
changes with respect to privatisation and reorganisation. Utilities have
to justify their decisions under high cost pressure and the awaken
consciousness of the necessity of a sustainable development.
Advances in computer and communication technologies in recent years,
open now a wide range of new potentials in urban infrastructure network
rehabilitation management. Geographical information systems (GIS) allow
a precise organisation of data and support to operational procedures in
the utilities. Communication technologies make many working processes
more efficient by supporting easy data collection and access via mobile
devices. In the technical field, the application of new inspection
technologies offers possibilities for the observation of under-ground
infrastructure. But most utilities do not know exactly what to do with
the large amount of data which is available now. It is a challenge for
engineers, in research and in operational fields, to find solutions for
efficient data use, e.g. for assessing and modelling the (future)
condition of pipes and improved valuation of assets.
The 17th EJSW shall be an opportunity to present and discuss new ideas
and research activities on these topics from all over Europe, and to
stimulate a fruitful exchange of ideas.
The main subjects of the workshop will be:
- Inspection and condition evaluation
- Strategic and operational planning
- Assessment of assets
- Application of GIS and communication technologies
- Multi-criteria decision methods
for the rehabilitation management of sewers, water and gas networks.
The Venue
The 17th European Junior Scientists Workshop will be held from September
3 to 7, 2003 in Neunzehnhain, in the vicinity of Dresden, Germany.
Call for papers
Potential participants are invited to send an abstract (max. 500 words)
dealing with one of the priority subjects above. Deadline: April 25, 2003.
Based on the contents of the abstract, authors will be invited before
May 5 to submit a complete paper by June 27, 2003. Authors will be
notified on the acceptance of the paper and invited to the workshop by
July 11, 2003.
Invited authors will have to transfer a deposit of 150 Euro (e.g. by
cheque) which will be fully refunded upon arrival in Dresden (no show -
no refund!).
The paper must be written in English and sent by e-mail to the
organiser. Ingo Kropp will collect all accepted papers and send them to
all participants. It is expected that all participants will have read
all papers before the workshop.
General information on European Junior Scientist Workshops
The series of "European Junior Scientist Workshops" originated in 1990
when the first of its kind was held in Switzerland on topics in the
field of "Operations Research Applied to Water Management". Since then,
16 workshops have been held in The Netherlands, France, Denmark,
Switzerland, Czech Republic, England, Germany and Norway.
In 1999, Dresden was already host of the 13th EJSW on "Service-Life
Management of Water Mains and Sewers".
About 20 international scientists are invited. They are typically, but
not exclusively, doctoral students involved in specific research on
related topics. It is mandatory to present own work in English, both in
discussions, lectures and in writing. The idea is not to listen and
watch, but to participate actively, to learn and help each other in
solving scientific problems in a co-operative, non-competitive
environment. Ideally, the workshop will initiate an international
network which will support the personal and scientific development of
each participant.
Thus, the most adequate venue is a remote place with the comfort of a
mountain cottage. Participants bring their recipes and do the cooking
and dishwashing themselves. They only have to pay their travel costs.
Work is intense with up to three sessions per day (morning, afternoon,
evening). Equipment, such as PC, LCD-projector, printer, overhead
projector etc., is available.
