‘Sex Object: Desire and Design in a Gendered World’
11-13 September 2003
Design History Society Conference, Norwich
The Design History Society invites submissions for its annual conference to
be held at the Norwich School of Art and Design, Norwich, England 11-13
September 2003.
Keynote speakers:
Dr. Sean Nixon: Senior Lecturer, University of Essex; author of Hard Looks:
Masculinities, Spectatorship and Contemporary Consumption (1996).
Professor Laurel Thatcher Ulrich: James Duncan Phillips Professor of Early
American History, Harvard; author of the Age of Homespun: Objects and
Stories in the Creation of an American Myth (2001).
The interdisciplinary conference will explore the connections between the
material world, masculinity, femininity, and desire. Papers from all
disciplines regarding any aspect of design and gender are encouraged.
This conference encourages contemporary and historical papers from a variety
of fields including: Anthropology, Material Culture Studies, Cultural
Studies, History, Art History, Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Social
Geography, American Studies, Film Studies, Popular Culture Studies,
Histories of Technology, Fashion, Textiles, Product Design, Photography,
Graphic Design, Ceramics, Glass, Architecture, etc and other academic fields
and areas of design practice.
Suggestions for panel presentations are encouraged.
Possible topics may include, but are not limited to the following:
Gender and Space
Women Designers
Gender and Design Biography
Masculinity and Manhood
Eroticism, Design and the Material World
The ‘Female Consumer’
Gender and Modernism
Gendering of Objects and Goods
Gender and the Domestic Interior, the Workplace, the Public Sphere
Queer Politics and Design
Gender and Representation
Gender and Design Discourse
Publication of papers is planned.
Timetable:
Deadline for one page abstracts (250-500 words): 31 March 2003
Conference from Thursday to Saturday, 11-13 September 2003.
Presentations should be 30 minutes in length.
