Abstract:
Learner managed learning across age groups
Learners of all ages can (and do) manage their own learning. This seminar
will compare using the Self Managed Learning approach with adults and with
young people. Our evaluation research on Summerhill School both helped to
save the school from closure by the Government and initiated other work,
including developing Self Managed Learning in Israeli schools via
collaboration with the Institute for Democratic Education in Hadera.
In the UK we have since launched the South Downs Learning Centre which
caters for young people who successfully design and run their own learning
programmes (instead of attending school). We have also worked with the
University of Sussex on projects which have included the empowerment of
school students.
I will discuss some of the processes and outcomes of this work, showing how
a learner managed learning approach is both feasible and desirable for
supporting the learning of people of all ages.
