The Government's White paper 'The Future of Higher Education', outlined a
number of ambitions that are relevant to the symposium.
Ambition 1: 50% participation target of the 18-30 age cohort.
Ambition 2: To close the social gap in HE participation.
Ambition 3: Improved retention
The symposium will provide an opportunity for people who undertake and/or
use the results of institutional research aimed at supporting these
ambitions, to come together to share their practices and experiences.
There will also be two keynote addresses: Professor Mantz Yorke, Liverpool
John Moores University will discuss the relevance of institutional research
for policy and practice in UK higher education, and Dr Vic Borden,
Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Management and Institutional
Research at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) USA,
and President of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR), will
provide a North American Institutional Researcher's perspective on the
central theme of the conference.
The conference will be of interest to:
* People involved in designing and undertaking institutional research
targeted at widening participation and improving student retention
* People who work in the area of widening participation who want to
improve their knowledge of the ways in which research can inform policy and
practice
* Senior managers with responsibility for widening participation and
retention strategies
* Policy makers from sectoral bodies and Funding Councils
* People who are interested in the ways institutions research
themselves in order to improve what they do
