2nd CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Exystence Thematic Institute
Discrete and Computational
Aspects of Complex Systems
Complex System Institute
Laboratoire d'Informatique du Parallelisme
Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, France
Lyon, June 16 - July 4 2003
-------------------------------------------
The purpose of EXYSTENCE, the European Complex Systems
Network of Excellence, is to develop collaboration among
European research scientists interested in Complex Systems
from fundamental concepts to applications, and involving
academia, business and industry.
Thematic Institutes are among several practical efforts
to foster collaborations. The idea is to have a number of
invited scientists (15-25) working together for extended
(and possibly recurrent) periods of time, e.g. month(s) at
the same location. The inspiration for such an arrangement
come from other institutions such as the Santa Fe Institute,
Princeton (and Jerusalem) Institutes for Advanced Studies,
Aspen Center for physics, the Newton Institute and the Emile
Borel center in Europe.
The first institute has been held during May 2002 in Trieste
(ICTP web page: http://www.ictp.trieste.it/). The general
theme was complex systems, focusing on networks, dynamics,
sociophysics and economics.
This call concerns the second institute that will take place
from June 16 to July 4 2003 at the Ecole Normale Superieure
de Lyon. A particular focus will be put on the discrete and
computational aspects of the modeling of complex systems.
The Thematic Institute will start by the international conference
Discrete Models for Complex Systems that will be held in Ecole
Normale Superieure de Lyon from June 16 to June 19 2003.
The following researchers have been contacted to participate
to the Thematic Institute:
- Eric Goles (Universitad de Chile, Chile)
(dynamical systems, cellular automata)
- Jarkko Kari (University of Turku, Finland)
(cellular automata)
- Michael Lachmann (Max Planck Institute, Leipzig, Germany)
(evolution dynamics)
- Cris Moore (University of New-Mexico and Santa Fe Institute, USA)
(theoretical physics and theoretical computer science)
- Mario Markus (Max Planck Institute, Dortmund, Germany)
(biological morphogenesis, population dynamics)
- Mark Newman (University of Michigan and Santa Fe Institute, USA)
(statistical physics theory, social networks)
- Martin Nillsson (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweeden)
(parallel computation and complexity in statistical physics)
- Dana Randall (Georgia Tech, Atlanta, USA)
(computational problems from statistical physics, randomized
algorithms)
- Alexander Russell (University of Connecticut, USA)
(complexity and combinatorics)
- Gerard Weisbusch (Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris, France)
(dynamics of complex systems)
Schedule :
- Application before March 15, 2003.
- Notification of acceptance by April 15, 2003.
Conditions of participation :
- Participants to the Thematic Insitute have to stay in
residence for a minimum of three weeks continuous period
but longer periods are welcome.
- The invitation includes local and travel expenses (cheapest
flights, up to 500 Euros). Office space and full computer
access will be offered to participants.
