Simulation for the Social Sciences
8 - 12 September 2003
This is a five day course on the techniques of developing simulations
to help with the exploration and understanding of social and economic
issues. It will provide a rationale for using simulation in the social
sciences and outline a number of approaches to social simulation at a
level of detail that will enable participants to understand the
literature and, for some selected approaches, create their own
simulations.
The course covers the basics of modelling and simulation in the social
sciences from different points of view and covers seven different
approaches to computer simulation in the social sciences, including
agent-based modelling. It is based on the book, Nigel Gilbert and
Klaus G. Troitzsch (1999) Simulation for the Social Scientist published
by the Open University Press
<http://www.soc.surrey.ac.uk/research/simsoc/sss/>. The format is
lectures in the morning, computer classes in the afternoon and a visit
to a local winery one evening.
This course is co-organized with ZUMA Mannheim and will be held at the
University of Koblenz-Landau in Germany at the Koblenz, Metternich
Campus <http://www.uni-koblenz-landau.de/university/brief-guide.html>.
An overview of the course can be found at
<http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~kgt/SICSS/ModSimNew.html>. Koblenz is
easily accessible by train from Frankfurt and Cologne.
The course will be taught in English by Klaus G. Troitzsch (Universität
Koblenz) and Nigel Gilbert (University of Surrey, UK), assisted by
Michael Moehring (Koblenz).
To be considered for the course, you should apply to ZUMA
([log in to unmask], tel.: +49 621-1246-221,
<http://www.gesis.org/Veranstaltungen/ZUMA/Workshops/
ws_Simulation_2003.htm>) as soon as possible (numbers are limited).
The last date for applications is 10 July 2003. There is a course fee
of 100 euro. You will also need to find the costs of travel to
Koblenz, accommodation and meals.
The course has now been running for six years. An advanced course,
primarily intended for those who have been to this or a previous
introductory course, will be held in April 2004.
Please forward this notice to others who may be interested.
