RICS Geomatics Evening Lecture - High precision GPS - Dr Marek Ziebart PhD
FRAS - UCL

Speaker: Dr Marek Ziebart PhD FRAS -UCL
Title: High precision GPS orbit determination: how to achieve 50mm of
precision from a spacecraft moving at 4 km/second.

Global Positioning System applications have become central to the science
and commercial practice of Geomatics. All these applications rely
fundamentally upon knowledge of the orbits of the spacecraft to compute
position, velocity, and attitude etcetera. This lecture will explain how
these orbits are calculated and used operationally, and what their
limitations are. Apart from the data available in real-time from the
spacecraft other, higher precision orbit information is available. How to
access and exploit these data sources will be outlined. To achieve the
highest precisions the modelling of the spacecraft behaviour and its
response to the environment is critical. Recent and current research in this
area is discussed, as are its implications for new constellations such as
GALILEO.

Marek Ziebart has undergraduate degrees in Physics and Surveying and Mapping
Sciences (from Queen Mary College, University of London and University of
East London, respectively) and a PhD in Satellite Geodesy/Astrodynamics
(UEL). He is currently a research fellow at the department of Geomatic
Engineering, University College London. His main research interests are
satellite orbit determination and GPS geodesy. He was part of the team
responsible for the computation of the new geoid for the UK, OSGM02. He
recently won a best paper award at the ION GPS conference for his work on
GPS attitude determination for low Earth orbiter spacecraft. He is currently
working on non-conservative force modelling algorithms for the NASA/CNES
altimetry mission JASON-1 and for the GPS Block IIR spacecraft.
