Teresa,
here are the info for next month:
December café scientifique
A scientific forum for the public: because Science is for everyone.
(free entry, no booking needed). Have a drink while you listen to a short
talk by a leading scientist. Discuss and debate about scientific issues.
The day: Monday 1st December
The time: 7PM
The topic: What is Nanotechnology and is it dangerous?
The speaker:
Anthony J Ryan
The ICI Professor of Physical Chemistry and
EPSRC Senior Media Fellow
Department of Chemistry
The University of Sheffield
The potential dangers of letting scientists loose on developing
Nanotechnology has been in the news recently. The fear of the world being
overrun with "grey goo" was even highlighted by HRH Prince Charles. This
fear has to be balanced against all the potential benefits we hear that
Nanotechnology will bring, in medicine and the environment, with
nanomachines saving lives and cleaning up pollution. We will review the
current state of the art, and see where the first applications of
Nanotechnology might be. Assessing the risks is not easy and involves some
crystal ball gazing. The biggest risk of all is that the creativity of our
finest scientists is constrained by ill-conceived regulations as the
freedom to do research is essential.
