THE OPEN UNIVERSITY
PhD Bursary Opportunity
Centre for Science Education
A funded studentship within the Centre for Science Education is available
for a candidate wishing to carry out doctoral research in the following
project area.
Educating science and society through dialogue: Examining media coverage of
science education.
We are interested in students working on a proposal in the area of media
coverage of science education. Students with a first degree or Masters
degree in media/communication studies, psychology, sociology or education
would have a suitable background to work on the project. Experience of
postgraduate study and academic research is highly desirable. The project
would examine media coverage of science education and could centre on one of
a number of contexts: for example, new technology in schools, distance or
higher education. Methods involved could include construction of a media
archive which could then be examined to identify key features in this media
coverage. Other areas of interest might include examining the impact of this
media coverage on audiences, the influence of production practices on the
coverage or the relationship between media coverage and decision-making
processes.
Supervisors: Dr. Richard Holliman, Centre for Science Education and
Professor Eileen Scanlon, Institute of Educational Technology.
