Yes. I realised later that I should have expanded on my comment.
Plenty of "public sector" PR folk make valuable contributions to any
discussion of PESTery. What I meant to say was that rarely does anyone call
upon the "fat cat corporate sector" to chip in.
I have been at meetings where people from Rolls-Royce, for example, have
offered very good insights into how they go about communicating to the
public. These people often have more resources and have to satisfy customers
who are far more demanding, especially when they are on contract rather than
in house.
Talk to the pharmaceuticals companies, for example, and you will find huge
expertise on getting scientific messages across to many audiences.

I know the people who did the PR for Dolly the sheep for a while.
This would be a somewhat different view on the issue. The Public Engagement
with Science and Technology (PEST) community seems to ignore PR folk. A bit
odd given that they are paid squillions to do the same sort of thing.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] looking for speakers on "biotechnology and media"
Dear PSCI-COM list members
In September this year the Journalism Department at the University of
Stellenbosch (near Cape Town) will host a "Media in Africa" conference. I
am looking for suitable key speakers / workshop leaders in a sessions that
will look specifically at BIOTECHNOLOGY and the media in Africa. I am
interested in local and foreign speakers with extensive experience of the
relationship between science and media, specifically in the field of
biotechnology. There is a possibility of sponsorship to attend and
participate in this conference.
If you want more information about the conference, go to
http://www.sun.ac.za/journalism/konferensie.html
If you want to suggest a potential speaker for this specific session, please
contact me.
