The following extract comes from a press release on a new book on science in the Indian media. Although publicity material, I thought it might be of interest to readers on the list. The author uses surveys to show that the coverage of science and technology in the media is minimal:
"What are the reasons that are not allowing science and technology to enter the
Indian media and what should be done to increase its quantum in various media, is the
subject of the science writer Dilip M. Salwi 's latest book `Science in Indian Media'
(Vigyan Prasar, C-24, Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi-110016 ; Rs 200 ). Based
on an all India study of the Indian media done by Salwi as a K. K. Birla Foundation
Fellow in the late 90s, this book not only gives a background of the subject, the need for
more science in the media and presents viewpoints of scientists, science communicators,
science teachers and media persons but also gives on a blueprint on how more science
and technology, particularly indigenously developed science and technology, can be
introduced in the present media. The book comes forth with several suggestions and
recommendations to policy-makers, media persons, science communicators, scientists
and scientific institutions."
I can provide the full press release as a Word attachment to anyone that wants it. It includes a summary of the recommendations and suggestions.
